Biography

Ye Mei Shuang was a beloved grandmother and mother who loved to cook, play mahjong, garden, and spend time with her family. She was born in a village in Guangdong, China on May 9, 1912.

Mei Shuang married into a landowner's family, and because of that endured much suffering during the civil strife that was rampant in China from the 1940s through the 1970s. She was widowed at an early age, and was forced to raise her children alone.

She immigrated to Boston in the early 1980s, when she joined her other children. She passed away in April 1997 of complications from a second stroke, leaving behind two sons, three daughters, 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren at the time. Another eight great grandchildren have been born since then, and more are on their way.

As a widow raising my kids alone, it gives me strength to learn about strong, successful women like Mei. She was clearly a wonderful, nurturing force for your family. Thanks for sharing her.

This is Manuel Torres and I received your kind note through the BereavementWriters@yahoogroups.com, a group that I had founded and thought was not operational anymore. This is a kind and beautiful way to remember somebody that we loved and who is not, physically, with us anymore. It reminds me of the marvelous tool that we learnt at Hospice Care in Montgomery County, MD, the remembrance boxes that we applied so successfully with young children bereavement but which I also practice with adults including myself. Your grandmother must be very happy and proud to have inspired this, your initiative. Gracias for sharing. Manuel
